Content Design Case Study

Introduction

The North Texas Lone Star Chapter (NTLSC) of the Society of Technical Communication (STC) provides opportunities for technical communicators, content designers, and technical trainers to network and build skills in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. During COVID-lock downs, NTLSC’s virtual content became more important.

In May 2022, I was able to go to the national STC conference. There, I met several leaders and influencers. I began to think about what the NTLSC chapter could do to offer our members/users a better experience. Many users interacted virtually- we needed to overhaul our approach to their online experience as they signed up for events, looked for resources, and interacted with other members.

Statement of Collaboration

I conducted the landscape research and rearranged the new suggested content components into a site map. I am working with college students from the University of North Texas and the University of Texas at Arlington to write the new UI for the NTLSC website.

Action

We needed to perceive our NTLSC website as a product and tool. I did a landscape analysis of the other chapters that placed ahead of the NTLSC in 2021. I looked at the top chapters and what content they offered on their website. I identified strategic gaps (missing content) within our website’s content, our competitive edge, and how we could go beyond and be a leading performer through our content.

I took the new content recommendations from the platinum chapters and sorted them into a new site map in Figma.

I met with the stakeholders in the project- the chapter president and two developers for our website. I walked them through what changes needed to make to our content to offer a better experience to our website users. I am writing the website’s new UI with the help of UNT and UTA students.

Result (Ongoing)

I would like to see an increase in 3-4 NPS increase,  50% gain in online visitors, an 20% increase in NTLSC’s collaborators and partners,  and 30% enrollment gain in NTLSC memberships once all changes were implemented. By implementing new content aimed at our user groups, we will help them accomplish their goals with a superior user experience.
